Thank you to the 300 guests who came out to celebrate World Red Cross Day with us at the 3rd annual Red Carpet Soiree hosted by Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar. The event was a great success, raising $15,000 for the Lower Mainland Disaster Management Program. Guests were greeted with Belvedere cocktails before grazing on original canapés and fresh seafood prepared by two of Vancouver’s top chefs – Executive Chef Frank Pabst and Raw Bar Chef Yoshihiro Tabo – and sampling fine Inniskillin and Sumac Ridge wines, donated by Vincor.
The evening featured silent auction items from some of Vancouver’s top hotels and retailers, including West Restaurant, Four Seasons Hotel, and Outdoor Adventures. The top bids were for an official Olympic torch at $1300 and an original Debbie MacKinnon painting at $1,100.
“It’s great to see so many people supporting their community this way” said Red Cross Director, Kimberley Nemrava. “The Red Cross hopes to double its disaster response capacity over the next five years, and volunteer events like this definitely make that goal possible”. In the wake of earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and China the world saw the importance of being prepared for unforeseen disasters. The funds raised will help prepare supplies and services in case of floods, forest fires, earthquakes, and storms in the Lower Mainland.

May 8 marks World Red Cross Day, which is celebrated internationally every year since 1948. This year, we commemorate World Red Cross Day by highlighting the local Red Cross Disaster Management Program and how it responds to community needs during times of crisis through direct services such as providing support, hygiene kits and blankets; family reunification service; critical information dissemination to the public through the TELUS Red Cross Call Centre; and coordination with all levels of government, local authorities, communities and other relief organizations to address outstanding client needs.
Join us to celebrate and promote awareness of the Red Cross Disaster Management Program and its foundation of preparedness, response and recovery!
